Jesus and Cannabis
Jesus 'healed using cannabis' ![]() Monday January 6, 2003 The Guardian Jesus was almost certainly a cannabis user and an early proponent of the medicinal properties of the drug, according to a study of scriptural texts published this month. The study suggests that Jesus and his disciples used the drug to carry out miraculous healings. The anointing oil used by Jesus and his disciples contained an ingredient called kaneh-bosem which has since been identified as cannabis extract, according to an article by Chris Bennett in the drugs magazine, High Times, entitled Was Jesus a Stoner? The incense used by Jesus in ceremonies also contained a cannabis extract, suggests Mr Bennett, who quotes scholars to back his claims. "There can be little doubt about a role for cannabis in Judaic religion," Carl Ruck, professor of classical mythology at Boston University said. Referring to the existence of cannabis in anointing oils used in ceremonies, he added: "Obviously the easy availability and long-established tradition of cannabis in early Judaism would inevitably have included it in the [Christian] mixtures." Mr Bennett suggests those anointed with the oils used by Jesus were "literally drenched in this potent mixture. Although most modern people choose to smoke or eat pot, when its active ingredients are transferred into an oil-based carrier, it can also be absorbed through the skin". |
"If cannabis was one of the main ingredients of the ancient anointing oil, and receiving this oil is what made Jesus the Christ and his followers Christians, then persecuting those who use cannabis could be considered anti-Christ," Mr Bennett concludes.

Even if Jesus did toke with the disciplines, it still doesn't have any relevance today. The weed or the stuff that passes for weed in our society is way more potent than it was just 30 or 40 years ago. Every old weedhead I speak to explains to me how weed today has been altered today to the point that it is actually a hard drug. Besides Jesus has the God-High, and no substance on earth can compare to that so I doubt Jesus was using weed for any sort of trancedental purpose.
I wonder if when he broke the bread with his disciples, if it had been baked with a little Mary Jane. They didn't have brownies in those days, so who knows? ;p
Potency is a red-herring. Asian and Mid-Eastern marijuana has been highly potent for far, far longer than your '30-40 years ago in our society' pretzel logic suggests.
Nobody has any reason to feel the facts asserted in this article denigrates the spiritual integrity of those involved. In fact, an open mind will discover the use of potent alkaloids has been crucial in the overall spriritual evolution of mankind.

What troubles me is how people cling to personal ideas about this sort of issue, and are loath to discovering (or even considering) anything that might conflict...regardless of veracity.
Humans (amongst other animals)
have been using drugs for thousands (possibly hundreds of thousands) of years; for health, recreational & spiritual purposes. They are like tools, in the sense that they are not inherently 'bad'. Only ignorance & imbalance create misuse.
As for Jesus, i personally believe he's probably been greatly misunderstood &/or wrongly interpreted anyway. I tend to believe that he was trying to tell us, that we are ALL, the sons (& daughters) of God. The only thing that made him special was his acute awareness of that fact.
So if he did use drugs, he probably used them well, but it's ultimately only an academic point for me.
It's just my take, its not set in stone (so please don't throw any at me).
My lack of certainty has no plans
to blow up your bus.. (not today anyway).
