The Science of Absinthe
What is this strange concoction known as Absinthe that has been banned by virtually all known distillers? Absinthe is a notorius 140 proof green liqueur that is made from anise, fennel and from the leaves of the Artemisia Absinthium. The other ingredient that gives the liqueur it's notorius nature is the wormwood. Wormwood contains the dangerous chemical "thujone" when ingested can cause dangerous side effects.
Even though the dangers of this liqeuer are known, it has a colorful history in which it was used as a medicinal cure-all to a drink that was banned because it was "madness in a bottle".

Modern Absinthe is not made the same as it was so long ago. I believe there is a substitute for Wormwood. It can be found in France of all places. While it is illegal to order it and have it sent to you in the US from France it is not illegal to own Absinthe or ship it within the US. This means that if you know some one who has it they can send it to you and you can enjoy its wonder (which frankly is rather exaggerated given the way it is made today).
The state of contemporary absinthe is a bit different than you suggest. It IS legal to possess and consume and purchase/import absinthe in the US in its original form.
It is NOT legal to distill it or sell it in the US, in its original form, hence the American form call Absente.
The article that the blog entry heading links to discusses efforts to faithfully produce original recipes.
Consult Absintheyes for many other links to good info.
Thanks for your input.
