Adam's Calendar
ANCIENT RUINS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
In the heart of southern Africa lies the scattered evidence of a lost civilisation whose people built some 20,000 stone structures. These breathtaking ruins constitute the largest continuous stone settlement ever built on Earth as it stretches over thousands of kilometres from South Africa all the way to Kenya and beyond.
These mysterious ancient ruins consist of dwellings, forts, temples roads, irrigation systems and agricultural terraces that cover thousands of square kilometres. It is our estimate that more stone went into building these features than went into building all of the Egyptian pyramids. It is an archaeologist’s dream that will unveil even greater and more mysterious secrets in years to come.
Adam's Calendar is the flagship among these ruins because we can date this monolithic calendar with relative certainty to at least 75,000 years of age based on a number of scientific evaluations. In turn Adam's Calendar points to the diverse ancient history of southern Africa and presents the first tangible evidence of the earliest humans in the 'Cradle of humankind'.

Dump the Dollar
Robert MorleyColumnist
American economists think the world can’t afford to let go of the dollar’s reserve currency status. The world is about to teach them differently.
What do China, India, Brazil, Russia, France and Germany have in common? These countries most often can’t agree on anything. But they are united in one strange—and ominous—way. They blame the United States for wrecking the global economy. And they think the dollar is the wrecking ball.
One rock-solid, foundational belief underpins almost all economic theory in America: faith in the dollar’s unassailable status as the world’s reserve currency. Foreigners hold so many dollars that they can’t afford to stop buying them, the theory goes. Therefore the dollar’s status as the world’s reserve currency is sound. But the dollar is now coming under a concentrated attack. Are American economists about to get schooled?
Has a dollar-killer been minted?Angela Merkel summed up the dollar-skeptic viewpoint last year. “Excessively cheap money in the U.S. was a driver of today’s crisis,” she told the German parliament. And America’s solution—even more cheap money—was just setting the world up for another crisis, she said. It was just a matter of time.

Yann-Arthus Bertrand's "Home" - MUST SEE Free Film on why we only have a decade to save the Earth
"Home" by Yann-Arthus Bertrand is a visually stunning and thought-provoking documentary about the damage humans have inflicted on the planet Earth. It is a collection of amazing aerial photos and videos from 54 countries all over the world, showcasing the vast beauty as well as the terrible scars that we left our home during the development of our civilization in the past 200,000 years. The impact of homo sapiens - wise humans - is nearing the critical point when it cannot be reversed anymore. "Home" shows us what we've done and what we stand to lose.
The film was shot from a helicopter using an HD camera. It took 217 days of shooting and 488 hours of footage to create the documentary. The movie is the first one of its kind to be released simultaneously to five continents across the world in different formats: DVD, television, and YouTube. It broke the world record for the biggest film release of all time as it opened in 181 countries on June 5, 2009. PPR, a multinational company based in France, sponsored "Home".
Here's the trailer of the film:
Equipped with a well-written script and persuasive storytelling, the message of the documentary is clear: now is not the time to be a pessimist and give up on our planet. There is still time, even though it's running out, to fix things. Bertrand suggests ways on how to reverse or at least slow the damage, such as turning to renewable energy, building of more national parks, fostering international cooperation between states, and providing more education on the problem. Bertrand quotes Theodore Monod, "We've tried everything, except love." It's about time.
The film is carbon offset, meaning all the C02 emissions produced in making it is offset by equivalent sums of money to be spent on providing clean energy to people who don't have it. All of Yann-Arthus Bertrand's works in the past decade has been carbon offset, which says a lot about his dedication to his own cause.
Message from Yann Arthus-Bertrand
We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate.
The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being.
For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film.
HOME has been made for you : share it! And act for the planet.

Breakdown
The very fabric of society is breaking down around us. What the hell is there left to believe in?
Charlie Brooker -The GuardianIt's all gone wrong. Our belief in everything has been shattered by a series of shock revelations that have shaken our core to its core. You can't move for toppling institutions. Television, the economy, the police, the House of Commons, and, most recently, the press ... all revealed to be jam-packed with liars and bastards and graspers and bullies and turds...
Neuromancer Revisited

Neuromancer at 25: What It Got Right, What It Got Wrong
The novel, published on July 1, 1984, predicted the World Wide Web, cyberspace, and a lot of other things. Which of William Gibson's predictions have come true, and which still seem far off?
Mark Sullivan, PC World
The tantalizing question about William Gibson’s ideas in his novel Neuromancer involves their relationship with the course that the Web took and continues to take as Neuromancer’s publication date--July 1, 1984, 25 years ago today--recedes farther into the past. In his afterword to the 2000 re-release of the book, novelist Jack Womack suggests that Neuromancer may have directly influenced the way the Web developed--that it may have provided a blueprint that developers who grew up with the book consciously or subconsciously followed. Womack asks "what if the act of writing it down, in fact, brought it about?”

96 months
Just 96 months to save world, says Prince Charles
The price of capitalism and consumerism is just too high, he tells industrialists
Thursday, 9 July 2009 -Independent
Capitalism and consumerism have brought the world to the brink of economic and environmental collapse, the Prince of Wales has warned in a grandstand speech which set out his concerns for the future of the planet.
The heir to the throne told an audience of industrialists and environmentalists at St James's Palace last night that he had calculated that we have just 96 months left to save the world.
And in a searing indictment on capitalist society, Charles said we can no longer afford consumerism and that the "age of convenience" was over.

Your Own Personal Apocalypse
Mark Morford -SFGate
- Notes & Errata
Your imminent apocalyptic death
It's just around the corner. Any minute now. No, really
the last four paragraphsThere is only one thing we know for certain, and that is everything is uncertain. Scientists are absolutely sure only that something dramatic and life-obliterating will sure as hell happen again. This is just the way the planet rolls. It's all a matter of when.
We can hardly wait. I mean that quite literally. So fascinated are we with such potentially lethal phenomena that we often seem to invite them in, offer up our wrists to the universe, somewhere subconsciously hoping, craving to accelerate the whole shebang. It's just so mesmerizing.
Global warming? Killing the oceans? Millions of pounds of recalled industrial meat? E.coli outbreaks in our cookie dough? We are not merely tempting fate. We are in happy collusion with fate in the planning of our own demise, proving that we love nothing more than to mess with nature far beyond her thresholds of respect and courtesy. Why? Simple: We can't wait to see how it all ends.
Maybe we know, deep down, that we sort of deserve it. Maybe we sense how we as a species are not really long for this world. Maybe we know, on a molecular level, that life is not meant to have any sort of real stability or permanence, that all is transitory, deliciously futile, so utterly and completely meaningless in every way as to be, well, deeply profound and eternal. What's not tempting about that?
