human stupidity and vulgarity knows no bounds.

I am almost overcome with anger and shame, I had never really heard this before.

Here's more

It's a shame the good we do is forever shadowed by the things we seek to hide.

Indeed, no bounds.

Amazing that even as much attention as Vonnegut garnered it with Slaughterhouse 5, Dresden still isn't up there in popularity (that can't be the right word, but you know what I mean...) with the big massacres (Hiroshima, et al.)

So true, Joe, it should rank much higher on the Hit Parade.

History is a dubious discipline. More of an art than a science. Sometimes we seem lost in a fog of our own creation.

Why do we attribute clean hands and clear consciences to the 'goodies' and error to the baddies? To lose a war is to prosecute it wrongly. Spoils for the victors, and relegation to ignominy the others. History is almost revised before it is written and those with the vilest secrets have the most to lose.

POV.

Usually, to lose a war is to begin one.

Why aren't we going after Mugabe, etc.?
Why is Africa stripped of resources while its people are left to starve?

The good news is:
Dresden is almost totally rebuilt.

Probably the most famous landmark is the old Lutheran cathedral called "Dresdner Frauenkirche".
It is an amazing building!
It was basically bombed into rubble.

As I travel there each winter to the mountains south of there, I would follow it's rebuilding progress. The walls as they went up looked like an odd patchword as new stones had to be added to replace pulverized stones. The new ones were light, the old ones were dark...from fire?

The other great thing about Dresden is the "Christkindlmarkt".
It is a Christmas market held within the walls of the old town. The town dates back to the 1400's and I think was the first such market. Things I always partake of: The pig roasting over open fires, the donuts as big as dinner plates, the Gluewine (hot spiced wine in a mug you take with you.
