Lame Duck Twilight Zone

Brace yourselves - George Bush will soon be free to do just what he wants

The raid on Syria is a dark portent. The current president has three long, unaccountable months to cement his legacy

We are about to enter the twilight zone, that strange black hole in political time and space that appears no more than once every four years. It is known as the period of transition, and it starts a week from today, the time when the United States has not one president but two. One will be the president-elect, the other George Bush, in power for 12 more weeks in which he can do pretty much whatever he likes. Not only will he never again have to face voters, he won't even have to worry about damaging the prospects of his own party and its standard bearer (as if he has not damaged those enough already). From November 5 to January 20, he will exercise the freest, most unaccountable form of power the democratic world has to offer.

How Bush might use it is a question that gained new force at the weekend, when US forces crossed the Iraqi border into Syria to kill Abu Ghadiya, a man they said had been funnelling "foreign fighters" allied to al-Qaida into Iraq. That American move has touched off a round of intense head-scratching around the world, as foreign ministers and analysts ask each other the time-honoured diplomatic query: what did they mean by that? To which they add the post-Nov 4 question: and what does it tell us about how Bush plans to use his final days in the White House?

This is what keeps me up at night - that, and a stolen election...

anna - I just watched "Recount" again on HBO. First time around I had to get up -- very frequently -- to walk it off. I stayed put this time and I can't help but think about ANOTHER stolen election next week. I know it looks like obama has the clear lead, but I can't shake this bad feeling I have that McCain will be in the white house come January

White House moves to relax many rules covering private industryThe new rules would be among the most controversial deregulatory steps of the Bush era and could be difficult for his successor to undo. Some would ease or lift constraints on private industry, including power plants, mines and farms.

RAND Lobbies Pentagon: Start War To Save U.S. Economy

I had better stop now before I'm up all night tossing and turning also.

I'm seriously thinking about asking the doctor for a bottle of "Mother's Little Helper".

The dastardly depth of corruption is unbelievable these days. Things are so much worse than I was willing to believe just a short time ago, it's surreal.

Every rock I turn over causes me to lose sleep, never mind the election. It has me so wound-up I go from a catatonic fetal position to searching for my suit of armor and back again.

Something better happen soon to restore my faith in my fellow man, else I'll be sailing into the sunset.

Now that the election is over and was not stolen....can we just breathe a sigh of relief.

However, I too agree "they" are not done with us yet. I fear we will end up looking like a Banana Republic when all the looting and raping and pillaging and plundering and lying is done.

I'm glad to be in good company.

Right now I'm listening to Aldous Huxley via a link I found here titled "FEAR IS A BRAINKILLER"

Any solace whatsoever is needed immediately in these fearful times....sometimes ZEN don't even get it.

But we can breathe out now.

Yeah, I'm not one for rubbing it in, but it's best to sleep with one eye open in the slide down this slippery slope of the final days of w's administration..

Can't quite close the book yet, as there were clear efforts to steal this election...and some races are still up in the air.

Zen is a good way to deal with the stress, anything that helps in the coming difficult days will be invaluable.

btw-
"FEAR IS A BRAINKILLER" and
"FEAR IS THE MINDKILLER"
are two distinctly different concepts.
