Depression
We reveal why depression can be worse for your health than physical illness
Depression does greater damage to a person's overall health than long-term physical diseases, scientific research revealed today.
The mental illness has more impact on sufferers general well-being than angina, arthritis, asthma, and diabetes, a paper published in medical journal The Lancet concluded.
The authors of the first global study comparing the health impact of depression with chronic physical illnesses said their findings highlighted the urgent need to improve treatment of the disease worldwide.
Saba Moussavi, of the World Health Organisation, and his colleagues said depression needed to be addressed as a public health priority.
- On a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 indicating worst health and 100 indicating besthealth, sufferers of depression had an average score of 72.9.
- This compared with 80.3 for asthmatics, 79.6 for angina sufferers, 79.3 for arthritis sufferers and 78.9 for those with diabetes.
Previous studies have ranked depression as having the biggest disabling effect of any disease worldwide.
Expected to become more common...

"It's better that some spend more time contemplating suicide than ruling the world."
~Indigobusiness
(this is becoming perverse¦:¬)
Not when considering the rulers.
If there is any truth in it, it was kicked forward for laughs.
Sorry to get serious but suicide is never funny & apologies if I am totally misreading.
I fear you are, Treac.
Anything can be funny, even the grimmest aspects of life. Suicide is no sacred cow.
Have you never seen the movie M*A*S*H? One of the funniest movies ever, and it hinged on a planned suicide. Even the theme song 'Suicide is Painless' was terrific, poignantly funny.
But, the humor is borne by irony, not actual suicide.
Besides, my comment was more about disastrous world leaders than anything else.
I get you and I'm sorry. Its a sore subject right now.
Have a good weekend.
Sorry, T. There's nothing funny when it becomes personal.
Slow cigarette suicide is properly frightening me.
On a lighter note, there has to be some way of taking over. I think its just the two party system. I don't think oppositional politics works.I'd rather employ "missionary politicians" with direct separate jobs with everyone having a chance to stand for each position.
I think oppositional politics should have gone in the 20th century.
Everyone dies, my sister is dying as we speak. In fact, she might be dead. Largely from cigarettes, I reckon.
But damn little mention in the controversy about the ammonia additives that freebase the nicotene in American tailor-made cigs. The health problems, and difficulties in kicking the habit, skyrocketed after adulterated tobacco was introduced.
It's all about control, and commerce. Like Il Duce said, the essence of Fascism is Corporatism.
Here's a tip: Kick tobacco by smoking additive-free tobacco (American Spirit, etc) for a week or two. Then, a nicotene patch or two will see you through. Worked for me, and I was dyed in the wool. It was a breeze, compared to the hellish previous attempts.
Politics has evolved into unenlightened self-interest.
Nicotine, not nicotene.
You'd think I'd know how to spell it by now.
"..for laughs."
Indeed.
Fags.
LOL.
American Spirit of course. I remember that one. Mt lungs thank you.
Indigo; for what its worth I am truly sorry about your sibling.
Yeah, T, I probably shouldn't have mentioned it here. But thanks.
Bless her heart...she's had a rough time of it.
